Referencing
Due to receiving our brief on our second essay of the course we were given an extra on referencing as students needed a recap on how to reference and also some questions clearing up , i believe i have a average knowledge of referencing , this lecture proved extremely helpful and answered a lot of questions i held back in my mind.
The lecture started off by identifying why referencing was used , we collectively said it: Prevents Plagiarism , Adds extra marks to your work , Shows valid research , Supports the original text , Makes your work easier to follow and identify and helps your work flow better. I feel that the main two points from this is to show research as without research everything you write could be fictional and not support your question in a professional and organised way. The other reason being that Referencing helps prevent plagiarism , passing other peoples work off as your own is strictly forbidden.
We were given a leaflet at the end of the lecture to guide us when referencing in our essay , referencing help is also available through tutors and through the library.
Software such as Medley is also used to help keep a bibliography when writing our essays.

Seminar 4 , Year 2
Presentation Feedback
This seminar focused on giving feedback from our essay presentation. Personally i feel that my presentation went very well. key things points that i was praised on included:
-Time Management
-Conversing using my own notes and not reading off the screen
-Good use of referencing
We then discussed as a group and found out that most people lacked on time management skills , however after previous praise this did not apply to me.
Things i was to improve on were:
- Layout of my slides , there was no theme or feel and was very basic
- keep my points relevant to the context
- speak fluently

Business Lecture 4 , Year 2
Buyer Behaviour/ Business Issues
To Start this lecture off we were shown various advertisements that thought outside the box , these ways of advertising products were smart and involved using the surroundings to their advantage , this showed us that advertising doesn't always has to be print based through flyers or billboards and can be done smarter , this would achieve better connection with an audience. One of my favourite examples of this was the Rimmel - Quick Dry nail polish. The designer had created a surreal piece of art which looked like the the bottle was floating , the message it was trying to get across that the nail polish would dry as soon as it left the bottle! (as shown below)

Buyer Behaviour is how the buyer thinks before they purchase a product and how we can tailor a product to spark various points in this buyer behaviour resulting in a purchase. The chart below shows how the mind process flows within every buyer.
Buyer issues showed us that certain things can effect the buyers behaviour weather this be age or even mental issues, These factors can effect the demand for certain products but also create gaps for new productions to be tailored around these issues.

The Research Question
This lecture focused on identifying the research question for our presentation. After a weeks think when struggling to produce a point of research i have finally selected 'How did Russian Propaganda in the 20th century influence modern graphic design?'. I felt that this subject had a lot of history to it and has very direct links to modern design , it is also a subject that I'm not very familiar with therefore will give me to opportunity to discover new things.
I had a quick research into the propaganda and found:

Business Lecture 3 , Year 2
Market Research
This business lecture focused on market research and how we can craft our research to discover the most about who our products would be aimed at. Primary and secondary research are the two types of research. Secondary been the easiest to gather as you look at previous sources. However Primary involves you generating your own questions which can sometimes be very costly , having to hire people to collect the research and other staff to process the information into a readable from can be very time consuming too.
Consumers are identified by using Market segmentation , this is breaking the market into distinctive segments such as: Age , Sex, Social Class, Geography, Hobbies and interest. successful segmentations are Measurable , Accessible , Substantial and Meaningful to the designer. this ensures successful targeting.
One of the most interesting things that i was shown this lecture is the ACORN classification chart, this chart classifies social class using the alphabet. This chart gave me an accurate description of social classes and what to look for when designing to a markets requirement. what shocked me the most is how many classifications there is in the world.

History of Graphic Design
History of Graphic Design
In this lecture spencer discussed the history of Graphic Design using a very cluttered and confusing mind map. Graphic design began in more of a form as art. The first graphics can be identified as hieroglyphics and murals created around the years 500-1000 AD. Other forms of graphic design included manuscripts about life , political status and technology in the early years.
Before the use of digital software graphic design was created using collage techniques and layering images over the top of each other. photocopying was a very common way of sealing all these cut and stick techniques together. This Piece known as 'The Lovers' By Man-ray in 1936 is a well known example of using layering techniques to create surreal graphical imagery.

Social developments added to big influences in graphic design such as the rise of youth culture through there 60's. People were expressing themselves more and weren't scared to turn away from the normal. This resulted in mass amounts of artwork , musical pieces and publications that were all graphically produced were published. The mass influence of fashion also created a demand for graphic design as advertisements , promotional material and new designs were all having to be made. Hallmark Psychedelia was a very distinctive style. Hallmark psychedelia came from hallmarks greetings cards as they designed cards with cheesy bright coloured stretched words to portray the hippie culture , this stereotype then took over and Hallmark Psychedelia became a serious style of design.

Business Lecture 2
Business lecture 2
We started the lecture by recapping over the design process and how thoughts should be carried out . we added a sub timeline to the process that showed how different elements of industry had to be added to the chain of thought , such as financial situations and how production.

One of the things we need to watch out for is the current world occurrences as they effect work in positive and negative ways. The News is very important.Pest analysis should be carried out when generating ideas looking out for Political , Economical , Social and Technological capabilities within the next 5/10 years and how these might effect your idea.another technique of a SWOT analysis is used to discover Strengths and weaknesses and also opportunities and threats to your design.
Finally we looked at the life cycle of the product. How it would firstly get off to a slow start selling , as people recommend the product and the popularity grows sales will increase. Advertisements will build hype and the product will retain a strong sales pattern for a certain amount of time and finally the product will decline. However the product could receive various spikes in sales if every day events occur , the sales chart works just like the stock market will how life events can make dramatic changes.

History of Animation
History of Animation
In the last year we looked at the history of graphic design and animation as a whole. however this year we began by looking at the separately to get a more detailed understanding of the subject. Over the course of the lecture we were multiple animations that were significant to the development of animation.
Animation started back in 1834 with its simplest from, the Zoetrope. The Zeotrope consisted of a collection of images on the inside of a wheel that were rotated to create a moving image of a few seconds long. The Zeotrope was created by William George Horner (British Mathematician). In recent years the Zoetrope has been developed into a 3D form by Studio Ghibli , which later inspired walt disney to create a similar design. The 3D zeotrope consisted of models that were span fast enough to animate them even though they were stood still. The difference was that no viewing hole was required and could be viewed from any angle.
The creation off the rotarscope allowed animators to easily re create the previous drawing using a light box. Prior to this it was hard to draw consistent animations. All these forms of animation are anti essentialist , meaning that the animation isn't fixed. on the early forms of animation we notice that the drawings flowed into eachother other. Bruce Bickford produced Prometheus Garden in 1988. The animation was Anti essentialist style of animation showing that nothing was permanently fixed and the plot could evolve as the story moved along. The artist used plastercine models and stop motion animation as the material can be crafted into a verity of shapes.

Seminar 1 , Year 2
Introduction
In this seminar we began by breaking down how we would research into a topic. We identified key steps that allowed us to extract as much information from a source and be able to use it to the best of our advantage.
we start with asking WHAT? , What do we want to create or investigate? This question gives you the foundation for thoughts , if you have no idea of what you want to achieve then there is no direction of thought.
Then the question is WHY?, What is the reason for investigating the subject and why does it relate to you? Look into what other creatives and researchers have done in this field to build your knowledge of the subject and spark originality.
Finally ending with HOW? How will you carry out your investigation and what kinds of tools , media and methods will you use to execute the task.
From carrying out all these steps the designer should have established wide knowledge of the task and have multiple ideas about how they would like to approach it. This also allows the designer to think about future plans. Research is key as it is used in professionally in industry. researching a subjects widens your knowledge especially if not much of a brief is provided.
We then applied this method of research to a piece of previous work. The Hear the Human project was created by AL Jazeera news channel to show that they looked beyond the story and went into the lives of the people they report about.
What?- TV and Online Documentary
WHY?- Al Jazeera wanted the public to know that it went beyond the headlines to find out what the people had to say other than just the reporters
How?- 6 People from different countries shared their incredible stories through a series of TV and online documentaries. deliberately directed in an elegant cinematic style and documentary style narrative.

First Briefing
Brief 1
Our first brief is titled Cybernetic Self , it is a 4 week short brief that focuses on how personalities are built over the internet. Throughout this project we should explore themes such as:
Autopoiesis- Meaning creating or production , a system capable of maintaining and reproducing itself.

Autopoiesis- Meaning creating or production , a system capable of maintaining and reproducing itself.
sociomaterial- Is the way that technology and sociology interact, especially how peoples activities are helped or shaped by technology in every day life.
Network Self- How someone constructs a personality and acts over the internet e.g an extension of yourself.
As the project is only 4 weeks the output will be very quick moving.
Week 1 - Research/Idea Generation
Week 2 - Formalise and develop
Week 3 - Begin final output
Week 4 - Finalise Ideas
Week 5 - Workshop Week
Week 6 Assessment Week
Personally i feel that i may struggle with this topic as its not something i have explored previously , however it will be challenging which will test my abilities. I am producing a supplement for a magazine such as Vice , ID , Dazed or something similar. This could be a document or print that would be suited to the readers of these types of magazines.

Welcome to Second Year
Welcome to Second Year
This lecture focused on warming us pinto what we were going to be studying in the second year of the degree. Peter explained to us about Placements and different ways of securing placements for your third year of study. He recommended that we should write letters to companies we would like to work for , this is because letters are very hard to ignore as they are directly addressed , where as emails can be handed down for someone else to open. Writing letters would secure a more friendly approach to the company instead of having a standardised email that is forwarded to multiple choices.
Not to directly ask for a placement in you're first letter is a good strategy of securing a placement as it allows the company or agency to get to know you as a designer and as a person , it allows them to see if you will fit into their team and have the right attributes for the job. Asking for feedback on your work from an industry point of view can also be helpful.
We then proceeded to look at more of a business side of Graphic Design, i enjoyed this because it was very different from what we learnt in first year , we were shown how to apply our designs to the working world. We started by looking at Different types of Graphic Designers:
Freelance - Someone who works for themselves
Agency - Team of Graphic designers that work on projects together
Company - There will be a creative team in a large company , e.g. Porsche , Creative Director.
We looked into basic forms of marketing Price , Product , Promotion and Place. These were the key points to look at when creating a product or design. We then broke each P into sub headings giving us a much more detailed insight into each point of marketing , For example:

We then looked at different channels of thought. We looked at Convergent and Divergent thought processes. Convergent thinkers will focus all attention on the problem and chip away at it ever so slightly until they get the right answer. Divergent thinkers will approach the problem from all different sides using different methods to try tackle it , eventually ending in a fast or slow answer.
